May’s Asset is: Restraint
The 40 Assets are common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence the choices our children make and help them become caring, responsible adults.
May’s Asset is: Restraint
This means that kids can identify, regulate, and control their behaviors and emotions in healthy ways, particularly in stressful or unstructured situations.
How can you help your children build this asset? Here are some simple ideas:
• Be clear about your boundaries, values and reasons. Explain why you feel the way you do and invite them
to ask questions.
• Talk to your kids about drugs, alcohol and sex.
• Encourage your kids to talk to other adults you know and trust if they are uncomfortable talking to you about
some of these topics.
• Look for opportunities in the media to bring up the topics of drugs, alcohol and sex. Discuss your reaction with
your kids and ask them their opinions.
• TV shows, movies, music videos & video games often communicate negative messages and show risky behavior.
Make a family activity out of challenging them and talk about why you do not agree with it.
• Saying no can be difficult for kids, especially when there is peer pressure involved. Help your kids come up with
words and phrases they can use in various situations and then practice them.
• Encourage your kids to surround themselves with friends who share their values.
• Be a role model.
